Infidelity Rates Drop During an Economic Recession

Well, there is one bright spot to the economic recession: Infidelity rates have dropped. My business investigating infidelity is down by as much as 50 percent since the market crash last fall. Although Bluevision is headquartered in Connecticut, we receive cases nationwide. I believe that there are three factors at play:

  1. Workplace affairs have been impacted by both corporate budget cuts and layoffs. With business travel being cut, workers can no longer count on using corporate-funded hotels for their affairs. And many workplace couples, or one half of many couples, have been laid off, ending their daily interaction.
  2. Would-be cheaters no longer have the discretionary money to fund the expenses required of an extramarital relationship, such as restaurants, hotels, etc.
  3. Those who suspect their spouses are cheating have decided they don’t want to have evidence of their spouse’s infidelity. They can’t afford to either hire a private investigator or undertake expensive divorce proceedings.

Since the decrease in infidelity is caused by people having less money, rather than rekindling their relationships, this downward trend is temporary. Infidelity rates will likely rise as soon as the market turns around and companies start hiring again.
