How to Perform a Free Criminal Background Check in Connecticut
If you’re about to hire a nanny or employee, get married, or enter into a business partnership with someone, you’re probably looking to run a background check on that person. Hopefully, you’ve already ruled out the possibility that they are an international criminal and fugitive by reviewing the U.S. “Wanted” lists.
The next step is investigating whether they are your run-of-the-mill criminal. The good news is that there is a lot of information available online for free. Since many criminal charges are processed by the court and since court dockets, case summaries and sometimes trial transcripts are public information, finding a criminal track record online is relatively simple.
The bad news is that the available online information is completely decentralized and segregated. Each state maintains its own databases of court records, sex offender records, civil records, property records, arrest warrants, prison & jail records, etc. In other words, you need to search through multiple online databases per state.
These searchable databases can help you find out if someone committed a crime in Connecticut and was prosecuted by the state:
Connecticut Department of Correction Offenders
Searchable database of current Connecticut prison inmates, incarcerated people awaiting trial, and former inmates on parole.
Connecticut Sex Offender Registry
Searchable database of sex offenders convicted in Connecticut and released into the community after October 1, 1988. Also includes a list of sex offenders convicted out of state who are now living in Connecticut.
State of Connecticut Judicial Branch
Searchable databases of civil, family, criminal, motor vehicle, housing, and small claims cases.
Keep in mind that in order to be thorough, you should search the databases of every state the subject has visited. Considering that someone with a criminal record may not be upfront about where they have lived or visited, I recommend searching the databases of every state, as well as federal databases, to be on the safe side. Obviously, this is extremely time-consuming, and most people probably don’t have this kind of free time. Private investigators have access to databases containing background information aggregated across the United States and can perform these background checks for you too.
Good article. In California, for example, the check of criminal records or licenses of physicians can be done online.
